Miracle Mondays: “Paper Sack Kids” by Brenda K.

Last November “Grandma K” got in touch with me regarding my “Best Books for Foster and Adoptive Families” at “Mommy Monsters.” She had a book she thought my readers might enjoy, called Paper Sack Kids. It tells the stories of some of the kids who have come through the home of her sister Diane, who with her husband Rex have touched the lives of foster children for more than thirty years. In one fell swoop, the gray-haired woman opened her door, the passenger door behind her, and the trunk lid. There were no “hellos,” “sure is warm out, isn’t it?” nor any mention of how cute the new batch of […]

Weekend Ponderings: Let Your Life Shine!

From this weekend’s Gospel reading (John 3:14-21). “And this is the verdict, that the light came into the world, but people preferred darkness to light, because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come toward the light, so that his works might not be exposed. But whoever lives the truth comes to the light, so that his works may be clearly seen as done in God.” While he was on earth, Jesus declared himself to be “the way, the truth and the life.” And yet so often, even as Christians, we make our own way, define our […]

National Council for Adoption: “Stay at Home Gala”!

Beginning today, NCFA is holding a special fundraiser called the “Stay at Home Gala.” This organization does so much to inform and support those involved in foster care and adoption, it’s important to remember them in these difficult economic times. I’ve made my pledge … I expect my “We Know How to Party” pack any day, and hope we can have something here for a gala of our own. Maybe a prize going to the best adoption story! In the meantime, why  not consider making a small donation as well?

EMN Mailbag: “Should I go back to work, God?”

The following letter of thanksgiving was sent to me from Monica Pope, in response to this month’s EMN newsletter, and is reprinted with permission of the author. Dear Heidi,   I’m happy to know God gives you employment opportunities that bless your family’s special needs, too.  Recently, we’ve received the same here.  With my husband’s significantly reduced work hours, we were feeling like Elijah’s widow, thinking, “A handful of meal, a little oil.  We may eat it, then we die.”  Then I got a wonderful job as a DRE at a nearby parish.  I love the job and especially love the requirement that I write a weekly article for the bulletin.  But I’m […]

What Should I Do with My Child’s (First) Name?

If you’ve been following EMN for any length of time, you know I’m a fan of birthmother counselor Patricia Dischler. “A Woman’s Prayer” by Grace Noll Crowell

The other day I stumbled on Amy’s blog, “Together for a Reason” and came across this prayer for mothers. It gave me peace, just reading it … I hope it inspires you, too! God, give each true good woman Her own small house to keep, No heart should ache with longing, No hurt should go too deep….. Grant her age-old desire: A house to love and sweep. Give her a man beside her, A kind man, and a true, And let them work together And love, a lifetime through, And let her mother children As gentle women do. Give her a shelf for dishes, And […]

A Prayer for Motherly Courage

Karen at “Be Still My Soul” shares this touching account of a young woman, Myah, whose preborn daughter was diagnosed with anencephaly — a congenital and fatal birth defect. The story itself is bittersweet. Instead of “terminating the pregnancy,” this young woman decided to share whatever time they had together out of simple love for her daughter. (I also appreciated Karen’s advice to all women of childbearing years to make sure they have enough folic acid in their diet, to prevent this kind of tragedy.) Today I’d like to offer this prayer for frightened mothers (including those whose children are not yet born), that God would […]
