Happy Grandparents’ Day!

In 1978, President Jimmy Carter declared the first Sunday after Labor Day National Grandparents Day. Have you hugged a grandparent today? The September 2008 issue of Metro Parent has an article about how the role of grandparents has changed in contemporary society. According to AARP: *  1 in 12 children lives in a home headed by a grandparent, * In Michigan, 5.5% of children live with a grandparent-caregiver, * 73% of custodial grandparents are under the age of 60, * 33% live in a home without the grandchild(ren)’s parent, and * 14% live in poverty. Of the 70,044 grandparents who are raising their grandchildren … […]

Remembering Blessed Mother Teresa

Today (September 5) is the feast day of a woman I feel sure is the rightful patronness of adopted and foster children: Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta. “Do not let the children die. Send them to me,” she was often quoted as saying. In each of those poor, suffering faces she saw “Jesus in distressing disguise.” Some time ago, I wrote a series of posts on her life, based on the book Come Be My Light. You can read the first one, “Come Be My Light: Thoughts on Spiritual Motherhood,” here. Otherwise, today I’ll keep it brief: Blessed Mother Teresa, who now intercedes for us before the […]

Have I Miscarried? Signs to help you know.

Today I came across this article online that identifies the signs that you have miscarried.  Recently Tina at “Antique Mommy” posted about her experiences with infertility, and put together a helpful list of things not to say to someone who is having difficulty trying to conceive. I hadn’t considered before that suggesting adoption might not be appropriate. My husband and I got married knowing that having a child of our own would be highly unlikely (though we would have been thrilled had it happened). So for us, we enthusiastically embraced adoption as a wonderful way to share our love with kids who might otherwise never have […]

Taking the Hooligans to Mass: Guest Post by Sarah (a.k.a. “MightyMom”)

In lieu of an actual Carnival this month, I’d like to introduce you to Sarah, a.k.a. “MightyMom,” who blogs over at “My Wonderful Life.” A mom with three children, two with special needs, she never seems to lose her perspective … or sense of humor. Enjoy! It’s quite the adventure.  Let me tell you about it.  But first, a few introductions.  I’m MightyMom, a Pediatric Nurse, a teething ring, a wife, a jungle gym, a mother, a burro, and I was a lifelong Methodist until 3 months ago when I discovered that the Methodist church is actively pro-choice on a national level.  Since then I have taken the […]

Wish list…

If you (or someone you know) would be interested in writing on one or more of these topics, I’d be delighted to have you guest post here at EMN … Or perhaps you’d consider writing on one or more of these topics for our next EMN Carnival! *  “Signs that your child may be autistic” (include a story of how your child was diagnosed, if possible. *  “Five things I wish non-military families understood about military families” (include practical ways others have helped you that you found especially helpful) *  “When a loved one goes to jail” (tips to help children who have a parent […]

School Daze… a Prayer for Parents

School starts next week. The beginning of the school year is always a little nerve-wracking at our house. Will Sarah cooperate in her new learning environment? Will Christopher be able to concentrate and work independently? A few questions nag at me as well. Will I “fit in” with the other parents? Can I find something to do that will be truly useful to the teacher without throwing out my back or spending more time at the school than my children do?  Will one or both kids wind up in a “peanut-free” zone and force me to find 52 ways to fill a lunchbox without resorting to […]

Shaohannah’s Hope: Steven Curtis Chapman on Adoption

Today I found this article on CNN, written by Steven Curtis Chapman, contemporary Christian recording artist and founder with his wife Mary Beth of the adoption charity, Shaohannah’s Hope. Chapman writes, “If only 7 percent of the 2 billion Christians in the world would care for a single orphan in distress, there would effectively be no more orphans. If everybody would be willing to simply do something to care for one of these precious treasures, I think we would be amazed by just how much we could change the world.” This website includes information for couples who are in need of financial assistance in order to pursue adoption.

Post-assault pregnancy: Is abortion the answer?

A woman who has been sexually assaulted deals with a range of physical and emotional repercussions that are difficult to imagine unless you’ve been there. Helplessness. Shame. Rage. Fear. For many, there is also a sense of incredulity. How could this have happened? Why me … and why him? Why didn’t God stop it? When will I feel safe again? And then, some discover there is one more horror in store: PREGNANT. His actions toward you were as far from loving as they could possibly be. The question is: What do you do now?

Should I Try IVF or Surrogacy?

By our very nature, women are called by God to nurture new life. Children are true “gifts,” the fruit of total self-giving, sown in the protected arbor of married love. When children are conceived in this way, we become co-creators with God – a human reflection of divine love that is the Trinity. So then, what is a couple to do when, after giving of themselves as generously and totally as they know how, they still do not conceive?
